Fresh oil drip? What to do in the first few minutes

October 26, 2026 ยท 3 min read

Fresh oil on concrete is easier to deal with than a stain that has sat for months. These first steps are about containing the spill, not about removing a stain.

1. Stop it spreading

Set the container upright, move anything that's still dripping onto a tray, and keep people, children and pets away from the slippery area.

2. Blot, don't rub

Lay paper towels or shop rags over pooled oil and press to soak it up. Rubbing or scrubbing at this stage just spreads the oil over a wider area.

3. Soak up the rest

Cover what's left with a dry absorbent such as clay-based cat litter or a commercial oil absorbent. Leave it as long as the absorbent's packaging suggests, then sweep it up.

4. Dispose of it properly

Bag used towels and absorbent and follow your local rules for oily waste. Never hose oil or residue toward a storm drain, because it flows untreated to local waterways.

5. Decide on the stain later

Once the loose oil is gone, take a look at what's left when the area is dry. If a mark remains on bare, unsealed concrete, that's the point to use a product made for it, following its label.
