Find the leak first: how to stop new oil spots forming
October 26, 2026 ยท 3 min read
An oil spot is usually a symptom. If a car, mower or motorbike is still dripping, any stain you treat will simply come back. Start with the source.
Map the drip
Slide a large sheet of clean cardboard under the vehicle overnight. In the morning, note where the drops landed relative to the wheels and the front of the car. That position, and the color of the fluid, is useful information for you or your mechanic.
Read the color
- Amber to dark brown or black: often engine oil.
- Red or pink: can be transmission or power-steering fluid.
- Green, orange or pink and watery: can be coolant, which needs prompt attention and should be kept away from children and pets.
- Clear and watery: often just condensation from the air conditioning.
These are rules of thumb, not a diagnosis. If you're unsure, show the cardboard to a mechanic.
Protect the floor in the meantime
Until the leak is fixed, a drip tray or garage mat under the problem spot keeps fresh oil off the concrete. Empty and clean it regularly, and dispose of the oil at a local collection point rather than in the trash or a drain.
Then treat the stain
Once nothing new is dripping, you can deal with the old spot properly, knowing it won't be topped up next week.
